Description
In 1678, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Padua. While her story may seem like the starting point for women in academia, it will many more years before women gained access a university education. Available only in Italian, the book demonstrates how, for centuries, academia has debated over the so-called coeducation. Can women and men follow the same study paths? Should that have access to the same knowledge? Does this pose a threat to the established gender roles? At the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, women gained the right to enroll at universities. The twentieth century will prove to be the century for women in the university. As not only students, but also educator, and in position of authority and power traditionally held by men. While the path remains full of obstacles, the book highlights many promising researchers forced to give up their academic dreams. The story of the University of Padua and its broad gaze towards Italy, Europe and the world at large, the book sheds light on a trajectory and the role of women in universities.
